余热锅炉具有其回收“余热的特殊性"，所以在设计余热锅炉时，必须对余热的特殊性给予考虑。当工业炉排烟温度大于500°C时，装设余热锅炉产生蒸汽其效果是十分显著的，在一般的情况下，如大，中，小型钢管厂在每一只退火炉窑上，都可以安装一台余热锅炉。余热锅炉的结构形式采用卧式烟管传热的原则，锅炉安装在炉窑上面，把锅筒、筒体的三分之一放在炉窑内进行直接受热，再通过直排烟管进行三个回程，使大量的烟气在烟管内传热，炉窑的烟气流量大致在4500〜6000m3/h时，都可以安装一台一吨的余热锅炉来提供生产用汽。
